Christmas Greetings

Baby in a coolomon

Some Australian churches are beginning to replace the manger in their nativity display with a coolomon. Shaped from the bark of a tree, coolomons were traditionally used by indigenous Australian women to carry water, fruit, seeds, roots and small babies. I think it’s a wonderful Australian image of Christmas

Yesterday I made a Christmas cake.

There was nothing exotic about the ingredients or the process,

but as it cooked the rich, fruity aroma escaped the kitchen

and drifted through the house.

I can’t send that Christmassy fragrance to you,

but I can pray that,

whatever you do and wherever you live,

the Christ essence permeates the ordinary of your life,

this Christmas and in 2016.
